Addendum to Excuse Me, Please, One More Drink
After my recent post on alcohol misue in the age of COVID, I recieved a couple of additional data requests. The first is to break down alcohol-induced deaths by age. That is forthcoming.
The second was to put New York’s deaths into context of other states. Although New York had a considerable increase in alcohol-induced deaths in 2020, it trailed other states in overall deaths on a per capita basis. In the chart below, the darker the blue means fewer deaths per capita (out of 100K). The darker the red means the greater number of deaths. You can hover over each state for more information.
New York was in the bottom five when it came to per capita alcohol-induced deaths in 2020 (Fewest deaths: Hawaii 9.3, Louisiana 9.5, New Jersey 9.7, New York 9.7, Maryland 9.9). The states with the greatest number of alcohol related deaths in 2020 were New Mexico (43.9), Wyoming (39), Alaska (33.1), South Dakota (30.4), and Montana (27.7).
